West Papua: Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) 2021-2026

The number of internally displaced persons in West Papua has risen sharply since 2021, driven by ongoing armed conflict between Indonesian security forces and Papuan independence groups. As of January 2026, over 105,000 people, overwhelmingly indigenous Papuans have fled their homes due to military operations, aerial bombardments, and security raids. Most refuse to return as long as military presence in their villages continues.
