Causes of wildland firefighter fatalities

Heart attacks, accidents and being trapped by fires have been the leading causes of wildland firefighter fatalities for decades. The chart shows the 170 deaths from 2006 to 2016.

A pie chart shows the most common causes of wildland firefighter deaths: heart attack (24%), vehicle accident (20%), aircraft accident (18%) and burnover (17%). Other medical causes were 10%.
