The term replacement of the parent generation is used when the number of girls in the children’s generation is the same as the number of women in the parents’ generation. Given the current sex ratio at birth and the low infant mortality rates in Switzerland and its neighbouring countries, generational replacement is assured if every woman gives birth to around 2.1 children.
