Fourth Grade: Basic Math Proficiency

Data shows that prior to 2023, the gender gap was closing among students who did not meet their country or territory's basic level of math proficiency. After 2019, the share of education systems where girls underperformed spiked to its highest level in 20 years.

Education systems were included in the graphics if they participated in four or more TIMSS cycles including TIMSS 2023.
