Hospitals' Bottom Lines

Many of the largest nonprofit hospital systems were profitable in the pandemic's first year, with bottom lines boosted by relief funds from the government. Some would have run surpluses without any relief funds.

All figures are for calendar year 2020. Operating income and margins exclude investment gains and other ancillary businesses. The provider relief grants include money kept by the hospitals even if they had not used it by the end of 2020. Mayo Clinic returned $156 million of its $338 million grant to the government so that portion is omitted from the chart. Some figures include state relief funds along with federal funds if the health system reported them together.
