Indigenous Papuans make up the majority in Papua Province (73.6%) but are nearly outnumbered in Papua Barat (51.5%). A direct consequence of Indonesia's decades-long transmigration program that resettled hundreds of thousands of migrants from Java and other islands. Updated ethnic data does not exist. The Indonesian government removed the 2010 census ethnic breakdown from public databases shortly after publication, reflecting what researchers have called a deliberate policy of demographic "unclarity."
