Police Enforcement of Traffic Violations Has Plummeted Amid a Rise in Complaints

In New York City, complaints about illegal parking made to 311 are routed to the NYPD, who task officers to respond. This is separate from civilian Traffic Enforcement Agents. These grievances have increased every year in the past decade. After hitting a low in fiscal year 2021, police-issued tickets have risen slightly.

A chart showing complaints about illegal parking increasing 800% to 442,000 between fiscal year 2014 and 2023 while parking tickets issued by the NYPD fell from over 750,000 to 266,000 in the same period.
