Local Wars Are Going Global

In 2025, a record 65 state-based conflicts were fought across just 35 countries. The widening gap reveals how multiple wars are increasingly overlapping within the same countries.

Annual figures cover 1946–2025. State-based conflicts involve at least one government and a minimum of 25 battle-related deaths per year. Countries are counted once per year, regardless of how many separate conflicts they experience. Figures exclude non-state conflicts and one-sided violence against civilians.
