Aviston School District 21 has tried to pass a referendum to increase its educational fund tax rate three times before, reducing the proposed increase by 10 cents with the second attempt and another 10 cents with the third. Each time, the referendum narrowly failed.

In the April 2023 Consolidated Election, the referendum proposed a 25 cent increase in the educational fund tax rate and failed by one vote (431-432). In the April 2017 Consolidated Election, the referendum proposed a 35 cent increase and failed by three votes (356-359). In the November 2016 General Election, the referendum proposed a 45 cent increase and failed by two votes (677-679).
