The most common causes of disaster displacement

Nearly 1.4% of the U.S. population, more than 3 million Americans, had been displaced by disasters in the previous year, Census Bureau surveys from December 2022-August 2024 found. Hurricanes caused the large percentage of displacements, at nearly a third.

Bars show hurricanes were responsible for about a third of all disaster displacements. Floods were next at 18%, followed by fires at 13% and then tornadoes at 11%.
