Share of University Budgets From Tuition and Related Revenue

Universities have come to rely more on tuition and other revenue related to having students on campus than on money from their states. Below is the percentage of total budgets for 2008, 2012, and 2018 that comes from tuition and auxiliary services such as residence halls, food services, intercollegiate athletics, and other services.

Note: This analysis includes 161 public institutions classified as either "very high" or "high research activity" in the Carnegie classifications. The percentages of total revenue are calculated by the sum of the percentage of revenue from tuition and fees and the percentage of revenue from sales and services of auxiliary enterprises.
