New Zealand switched from measuring a "de facto" population to a "resident population" in 1991, causing a break in the series. The growth rates in this chart are calculated based on the Stats NZ long term population series from 1840 (based on de facto until 1991) and then resident population from 1991 onward. Population growth in 1991 was artificially higher given the switch in reported population, and so population growth in 1991 is shown as the de facto population growth rate.
