All North African research reactors are in populous coastline areas. Algeria has two research reactors and Morocco one at the country’s nuclear science center near Rabat. In Libya, two reactors were built but are presently inactive; one in Tajoura near Tripoli and a dual-use civil-military power plant in Sirte, roughly between Tripoli and Benghazi. Yellow cake uranium was stolen in 2023 from the Tamanhint military base in Libya, which houses private military contractors from Russia.
