What was supposed to be a 'managed' fire burning safely within a 13,000-acre perimeter escaped July 12 due to unpredicted winds. The blaze is now mostly contained, though it's reached nearly 18,000 acres.
U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-NM) criticized the United States Forest Service for its management of the fire, which she says has killed or maimed livestock and caused other damage.
