Change in Population in the 25 Largest U.S. Cities

Since the April 1, 2020 decennial census, which coincides with the start of the pandemic, only three of the 25 most-populous U.S. cities have lost a higher share of its population than Philadelphia, which shrank by 1.8%. The cities near Philadelphia’s ranking — Los Angeles, Boston, San Jose, New York, and San Francisco — have some of the most expensive housing costs in the country.
