Pension spending includes debt service on pension bonds and subsidies to the Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund to give a more accurate picture of pension spending than official reporting. To avoid double counting, $254.56 million is excluded from K-12 spending and $797.4 million is excluded from debt service compared to official budget documents. Total spending reflects $997 million in prior-year unspent appropriations, which are subtracted.
