The Best Stargazing Spots in the Mediterranean

Many of the locations in this ranking share identical or near-identical SQM scores. Where ties occur, destinations are grouped together rather than strictly ordered, as differences at this level are often negligible in real-world stargazing conditions.

We analysed sky darkness across coastal Mediterranean regions and popular sailing areas using Sky Quality Meter (SQM) data from Light Pollution Map, based on NASA’s VIIRS satellite observations. Readings were taken at offshore coordinates near each coastline to reflect real at-sea conditions. Locations were then ranked by SQM score, with higher values indicating darker skies and better stargazing.
