The rate of injuries involving a cell phone rose sharply with the introduction of smartphones a decade ago, Rutgers University researchers found by analyzing emergency-room data.
Rates per million people include injuries associated with phone use, such as tripping due to distraction, as well as "direct" injury such as the device hitting the face.
