Racial distribution of people admitted to prison in California with a gun enhancement, conviction years 2014-2025
Two sets of horizontal stacked bar charts show the racial distributions for people admitted to prison in California with a gun enhancement from 2014-2025, broken out by "Unaffected" and "Affected" enhancements before (2014–2017) and after (2018–2025) SB 620 took effect. The racial distribution remains relatively stable between the pre- and post-periods:
Unaffected enhancements: Hispanic individuals represent the largest share at pre: 46% and post:47%; followed by Black individuals at pre: 30% and post 29%; White individuals at pre: 19% and post: 17%; Asian and Pacific Islander individuals at pre: 2% and post: 3%; individuals in the “Other” racial category at 3% pre and post; and American Indian/Alaska Native individuals at 1% pre and post: 1%.
Affected enhancements: Hispanic individuals represent the largest share at 48% pre and 50% post; followed by Black individuals at 35% pre and 34% post; White individuals at 11% pre and 10% post; individuals in the “Other” racial category at 3% pre and post; Asian and Pacific Islander individuals at pre: 2% and post: 2%; American Indian/Alaska Native individuals at about 1% pre and post: 1%.
