Comparison of the American Community Survey (ACS) and Current Population Survey (CPS)

Note: Multigen = Multigenerational. GP = Grandparent. Multigen Households include those where grandchildren are living with their grandparents, regardless of whether their parents are present. The ACS has a significantly greater number of multi-generational households, possibly because they directly ask respondents whether they live with a grandchild. In the CPS ASEC, we must infer whether the house is multi-generation based on the inter-household relationship variable and thus cannot accurately identify all households that are multi-generational.
