San Joaquin Valley crop diversity by farm size

Crop types grown (%)   Crop types grown (acres)   Crop diversity

Average number of crops grown by farms of different sizes (out of 23 crops)

NOTES: Farm size classes are estimated as irrigable crop acres held by distinct owners on the San Joaquin Valley floor. Crop diversity is a measure of the average number of crops out of 23 crop categories. For descriptions of the crop categories, see the accompanying dataset: JoaquĆn Morales and Ayres PPIC Farm Sizes in the San Joaquin Valley: Land Uses (PPIC 2023). The chance of misclassification in the land uses on individual parcels is greater for the smallest farms, especially when they are growing diversified fruits and vegetables. Get the data Embed
