NOTES: Farm size classes are estimated as irrigable crop acres held by distinct owners on the San Joaquin Valley floor. Crop diversity is a measure of the average number of crops out of 23 crop categories. For descriptions of the crop categories, see the accompanying dataset: Joaquín Morales and Ayres PPIC Farm Sizes in the San Joaquin Valley: Land Uses (PPIC 2023). The chance of misclassification in the land uses on individual parcels is greater for the smallest farms, especially when they are growing diversified fruits and vegetables.
