Most Americans prefer legalization to deportation

When polls ask respondents whether they support either (a) putting migrants living in the U.S. without authorization on a path to legal status or (b) deporting them, people consistently favor legalization by a substantial margin. As of Nov. 5, 2024 — Election Day — only about 40% to 44% of Americans said they'd back mass deportations.
