Homeless counts, 2019 vs. 2024

Only Washington, D.C., Maryland, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mississippi and Wyoming counted fewer homeless people in 2024 than in 2019.

This map of U.S. states and territories shows the percent change in counts of homeless people from 2019 to 2024. Most places increased (nationwide, counts increased 35.9%). Largest increases: Vermont is up 217.5%, Illinois up 153.3%, Rhode Island up 131.5%, Colorado up 94.6%, Hawaii up 81.5%, New York up 71.6%. Declines are limited: Puerto Rico is down 17.3%, Washington, D.C., down 13.9%, Mississippi down 12.1%, Wyoming down 8.6%, Maryland down 7.5%.
