Veterans die by suicide at a higher rate than civilians

The suicide rate per 100,000 veterans remains about double the rate for civilians. Both rates increased from 2001 to 2019 amid an increase in the general population and a decrease in the veteran population.

According to the 2021 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report from the VA, released in September, the suicide rate among veterans rose from 23.3 per 100,000 in 2001 to 31.6 per 100,000 in 2019. The rate among non-Veteran U.S. adults rose from 12.6 per 100,000 in 2001 to 16.8 per 100,000 in 2019.
