(5) Afghanistan President Ghani hits two-term limit in 2024

Ashraf Ghani was Finance Minister after the US overthrew the Taliban, prior to which he was a professor at Johns Hopkins in the US and worked for the World Bank. Abdullah Abdullah was formerly a member of the Northern Alliance (anti-Taliban) and is the losing contender in the last three elections, each of which he has disputed. After 2014 and 2019 he has signed power sharing agreements with Ghani.
