The Graphic, titled “Black students face larger share of disciplinary transfers,” shows the share of black students enrolled in 12 California districts compared to their share of students transferred for discipline reasons and to alternative schools. In each of these districts, Black students are overrepresented among students transferred. For instance, they make up 23% of enrollment in the Oakland Unified school district but 48% of such transfers. In the Long Beach Unified school district, Black students make up 13% of enrollment but 29% of these transfers. Transfer data comes from documents obtained from districts through public records requests.
