Coast lost population, Central Valley & high country grew

California's population grew by about 94,000 residents — roughly 0.2% — between 2019 and 2023. Declines were largely concentrated in the most densely populated coastal areas, with San Francisco losing almost 34,000, or about 4% of its population. Meanwhile, Sacramento, Riverside and San Juaquin Counties added almost 200,000 new residents combined.
