BLS projections are based on detailed occupation categories. Since unionization numbers are not available for detailed occupations, the authors used unionization rates in the corresponding major occupation groups as a proxy. For example, home health aides and medical assistants both belong to the "healthcare support occupations" major occupation group. Cooks; combined food preparation and service workers; and waiters and waitresses all belong to the "food preparation and serving related occupations" group. In reality, unionization rates in detailed occupations may vary slightly from those of the broader major occupation groups.
