The red flag law, legislation aimed at confiscating weapons for up to one year from people deemed dangerous, is increasingly used in New York to prevent gun crimes. According to court records examined by POLITICO, from 2019 to 2021, ERPOs were rarely used in New York. After Hochul expanded the law in 2022, New York experienced a significant increase in requests for ERPOs, going from 538 statewide in 2021 to 4,257 in 2022.
