Europe: 4.5 million hectares burned in 10 years

EFFIS recorded at least 24,000 wildfires across Europe during the 2015-2025 fire seasons, burning 4.5 million hectares. In recent years, both the number of fires and the area burned increased. In 2025, 18 megafires — each exceeding 10,000 hectares — occurred across four countries during the same fire season.

The analysis covers the fire season from April to October, limiting the inclusion of prescribed burns occuring during winter months. From 2018 onwards, the number of recorded fires is not directly comparable with previous years, as Sentinel-2 enabled EFFIS to map fires as small as five hectares.
