After the Cold War ended, military bases nationwide closed

On average, in each of the four rounds of base closures from 1988 to 1995, every one of the 13 Western states had one base shut down. States in other regions also experienced base closures, but at a lower rate. Even a slightly higher rate of non-Western base closures in 1993 was not enough to rebalance the overall trend.
