Employment Plummets at Private Institutions

Each year’s February-to-March change in terms of the number of workers employed by private universities and colleges.

The employee estimate for March 2020 is preliminary and may be revised. All figures are seasonally adjusted. The work-force estimates charted above are the sums of employee counts in two distinct industries: privately controlled colleges, universities, and professional schools, as well as privately controlled junior colleges. To avoid methodological complications, The Chronicle did not factor into its analysis employee estimates associated with other industries grouped within the educational-services sector (NAICS: 61).
