Impact of proposed property tax overhaul

Florida legislators are considering several proposed constitutional amendments to reduce property taxes for owner-occupied residences. If lawmakers approve, one or more referendums would be on the November 2026 ballot.

Immediate elimination of property taxes
HJR 201 proposes an amendment to the State Constitution to exempt homesteaded property from all ad valorem taxation other than school district levies. The following projections, from the Broward County Property Appraiser's Office, were calculated as if the proposed amendment were in effect for the 2025 tax year.

NOTE: These projections are being calculated as if the amendment was in effect for the 2025 tax year based on the plain wording of the amendment and no implementing bill language which could affect the savings estimate.
