The transition from the Ab-nā of the south to the Abnāʾ of Baghdad is a primary example of a geopolitical overwrite. In the earlier eras, the term denoted a specific class of "Foundational Proprietors" who held the keys to the Red Sea littoral. By the Abbasid period, this identity was stripped of its regional autonomy and repurposed as a client-class within the imperial military-administrative machine.
