The planet is absorbing more sunlight than it sends heat back to space — and the gap is widening

Satellites have measured both sides of Earth's energy budget since 2000. The black line is the sunlight the planet absorbs; the red line is the heat it radiates back to space. Whatever doesn't escape stays here and warms the planet. That surplus has more than doubled in twenty years.
