A wider look at crime trends in the nation's capital

Property crime had been trending downward in Washington, D.C., but incidents started to rise after February 2026. Violent crime had been trending downward in D.C., since it peaked in 2023, but similarly started to rise after February.

Crime counts are reported as monthly totals. Violent crime includes homicides, sex abuse, assault with a dangerous weapon and robbery. Property crime includes burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. Counts are based on incident report date. Incident data is preliminary and may change. Data as of Aug. 3, 2026.
