The rate of tenured professors at 4-year colleges in the US has fallen in the past 30 years

In the 1990-1991 academic year, 65.2% of professors at four-year colleges held academic tenure, a permanent teaching status. But the most recent data, from 2018-2019, shows that number has dwindled down to just under half.
