Women are overrepresented in low-wage work across almost all racial/ethnic groups

The bars show the share of women in the labor force and the share of women paid low wages for each racial/ethnic group. For example, over half (56.4%) of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) low-wage workers are women, but women make up 50% of all AAPI workers.

Bar chart comparing the gender breakdown of low-wage workers and all workers across California in 2022, for each race/ethnicity: Hispanic, non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) alone, and non-Hispanic multiracial/other. Across all groups, except for AIAN alone, women make up a larger share of the low-wage workforce than the general workforce.
