In 1918, America's death rate skyrocketed

For both white and Black Americans in cities across the country, the death rate from influenza and pneumonia per 100,000 people in 1918 was far higher than in the years preceding or following the influenza pandemic. Research comparing these changing rates shows that the death rate for white people grew more than for Black Americans.
