Why do Oregonians file ERPO petitions?

Extreme Risk Protection Order petitions can be filed by law enforcement officers or family members close to the individuals. The law outlines a number of reasons the orders can be requested, including histories of suicide or violent acts or certain criminal violations. If a judge agrees that the person poses a threat to themselves or others, they can issue an order for the temporary removal of the person's firearms.
