BWCA virgin-forest fires, 1542-1972

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area that we know can only exist with prescriptive fire that sustains its historical mix of trees, plants and wildlife. Here's a look at fire year intervals and burn percents by cultural history periods for the virgin forests of the BWCA, 1542 to 1972. Major fires and intervals have been in decline since the 'settlement' era began, according to this data collected by U.S. Forest Service ecologist Miron Heinselman in the early 1970s.

Basis for table is the 1-million acre virgin area defined in 1948 forest-type maps, including some areas outside the BWCA. Some of this forest has since been cut.

"Major fire years" are defined as those with burns of over 100 square miles. There were only nine such years: 1894, 1875, 1864, 1824, 1801, 1759, 1727, 1692, 1681.
