Cases of "brain-eating amoeba" in the U.S., 1962-2022

Naegleria fowleri is commonly called the “brain-eating amoeba” because it can cause a brain infection, primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Georgia has since reported a case in July 2023, bringing the state's total to six since 1962.
