California avoiding worst of recent coronavirus wave

California averaged 1.47 daily deaths per million residents due to the coronavirus over the past week, well below the U.S. death rate of 2.25. Death rates due to COVID-19 are lower on the West Coast and in the Northeast, and higher in the Midwest and South. Daily death rates per 1 million residents over the past week:
