The number of cooling degree days are increasing around the world
Europe has seen the biggest relative rise (+60% since 2000 and +115% since 1990), but its cooling needs still remain much lower than in other parts of the world. The graph below shows the number of cooling degree days per year, by region, 1990-2025.
Cooling degree days (CDDs) are a measure of cooling needs – a day is considered as such when the average outdoor temperature exceeds 18.3°C, the threshold beyond which, to ensure comfort, it is necessary to cool rooms rather than heat them.
