The 79 LMICs in or at Risk of Debt Distress

Credit agencies provide ratings for 88 out of 134 low-and middle-income countries (World Bank classification). Of these countries, 30 are rated as having "substantial risks." The IMF provides debt sustainability analyses (DSAs) for 69 PRGT-eligible countries, plus Guyana. Out of those, 9 countries are considered to be in debt distress, 25 are at high risk, and 28 are at medium risk of debt distress. The combined analyses result in 79 low -and middle-income countries in or at risk of debt distress.

* While the World Bank upgraded Guyana's income classification from "upper middle-" to "high-income" in 2024 based on 2022 financial data, it is still included in the World Bank's IDS for LMICs, and in this analysis.
