States are ranked by the change in time needed to save for a housing down payment from 2016 to 2026 at median household income. Also shown are total years needed to save as of 2026 at median household income, and at single earner minimum wage.

Time needed to save for a home down payment is a point-in-time affordability estimate. Down payment is calculated based on 20% of each state's typical home value in 2016 and 2026. Time to save is calculated on an assumed savings rate equal to 10% of income.
