In the four years following Italy's formal joining of the Belt and Road Initiative, its imports from China rose sharply to 2022. Its exports to China rose only marginally, reflecting a substantial trade imbalance.
On March 23, 2019, Italy formally joined the Belt and Road Initiative by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with China.
