Where Aid in Dying Is Allowed

As of August 2024, nine states and the District of Columbia explicitly allow terminally ill patients to obtain medications to end their lives — and a court ruling in Montana has left the door open to it. In the latest legislative sessions, lawmakers in many states have considered aid-in-dying bills.

Note: Montana’s legal stance is unclear despite a 2009 court decision laying out a defense for physicians involved. Bills to criminalize or legalize aid in dying have stalled in legislative sessions since that ruling. Vermont and Oregon allow nonresidents to use their aid-in-dying laws.
