Values are expressed as the average spending in dollars for each 20 percent quintile. Income quintile ceilings are: Lower quintile $12,000, Second quintile $23,680, Third quintile $38,970, Fourth quintile $65,000, Highest quintile $318,505. For the lowest two quintiles, healthcare expenditure ranged from 9.4 to 10 percent of total household expenditure, while for the highest quintile healthcare expenditure was only 6.6 percent of total household expenditure (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
