EU/EFTA citizens make up almost two-thirds of the foreign population in Switzerland
The foreign permanent resident population in Switzerland by nationality type, 1981-2024. Immigration from European countries grew strongly after the entry into force of the free movement agreement.
The EU-17 includes the following countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, and the UK (until 2020). The EU-8 is comprised of Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The EFTA category includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
